Romans' Run 2009
This summer night's run pays tribute to the Romans who founded the city of Flavia Solva around the year 70 AD, close to the modern city of Leibnitz in the south of Austria.
Many runners dress up as Romans, and the teams with the best Roman costumes get a prize.
The event offers a 6k run, a quarter marathon (10.55km) and a half marathon (21.1km, two laps).
The race follows a new course with start and finish at the Naturparkzentrum Grottenhof, a redeveloped estate 2 kilometres to the north of Leibnitz.
Most of the route is flat but after about 3 kilometres the race crosses the Seggauberg, a wooded hill with a 13th-century castle on top. The elevation gain/loss is approximately 80 metres. After that, participants run a loop around an artificial lake, and then on cycle paths along the River Sulm back to the finish.
A firework display brings the event to an end.
In 2008, the winners of the half marathon were Erich Kokaly (1:12:30) and Mirva Rintala (1:30:51).
