Held annually since 2002 in Gera, a city of about 96,000 people in the state of Thüringen (Thuringia) in Germany, the Elstertal-Marathon (Elster Valley Marathon) attracts a couple of hundred runners every year.
It offers a number of races for all ages:
- Kinderläufe (children's races)
- 3km Jedermannlauf (fun run)
- 5 x 3km Staffel (relay for business and school teams of 2-5 runners)
- 21.1km Halbmarathon (half marathon)
- 42.2km Marathon
The start/finish area is at the Hofwiesenbad swimming pool in the Hofwiesenpark, a public park situated on the right bank of the Weiße Elster (White Elster).
The 3k, the relay and the children's races take place in the park whereas the longer races take the runners out and back along the river.
The 42.2km marathon route runs at first southwards (upstream) to the village of Wünschendorf, then northwards (downstream) through Gera to the beer-producing town of Bad Köstritz, and from there back to the finish line in the Hofwiesenpark.
One of the highlights on the course is the Historische Holzbrücke Wünschendorf (pictured), a beautiful historic wooden bridge, which the marathon runners cross in both directions.
