Goethe and Schiller in Weimar

Held in Weimar, a city of about 64,000 people in the state of Thüringen (Thuringia) in central Germany, the Weimarer Stadtlauf attracts well over 2,000 runners every year.

Dubbed the Stadt der deutschen Klassik, Weimar boasts an immense cultural heritage. Many literary and artistic geniuses like Goethe, Schiller, Cranach, Bach and Liszt worked there, and in 1919 the famous Bauhaus art school was founded in Weimar.

The Stadtlauf offers a 10km race (two laps), a half marathon (four laps) and a number of shorter children's races.

Starting on Goetheplatz in the city centre, participants run on mixed terrain (asphalt, cobbles and gravel) through Weimar's very pretty historic centre and through an English-style park where they pass Goethes Gartenhaus (pictured below).

The route is gently undulating.

Thousands of spectators line the course every year as the Stadtlauf forms part of the annual Zwiebelmarkt (Onion Market) which has been held for more than 360 years and which draws approximately 300,000 visitors over three days.
