Held on a Friday night in mid-July, the Nachtlauf Kassel ("Night Run Kassel") offers three races: 10km, 5km and 1.3km for children.

The route is a 2.5km-long loop through the city centre of Kassel, a city of about 200,000 people in the state of Hessen (Hesse) in central Germany.

The race takes in two vast squares — the circular Königsplatz, where the race begins, and the 340m-long Friedrichsplatz which is home to the Fridericianum, one of Europe's oldest museum buildings (pictured).

More than 1,000 runners took part in the event last year.

The Nachtlauf Kassel forms part of the popular Stadtlauf series which is held between May and October in twenty German cities.

In all Stadtlauf races, participants get, instead of a bib number, a technical T-shirt which they must wear during the race.
