Every year on New Year's Eve, an international crowd of about 1,500 runners lines up for the Berliner Silvesterlauf in Germany's capital Berlin.

Held on a challenging multi-terrain course in the vast Grunewald forest on the western fringes of the city, the event offers two races for adults (6.3km and 9.9km) and two races for young athletes (2km and 4km). The shorter routes are open to women as well.

From the course, participants get some fine views of the cityscape in the distance as they run up and down the slopes of two hills, the Teufelsberg (pictured) and the Drachenberg. Both are man-made hills built of rubble after World War Two.
