Held three weeks after the Stadtlauf Chemnitz, the Chemnitz Marathon offers another fine opportunity to visit the city of Chemnitz in the former East Germany.

The "Stadt der Moderne" is home to about 240,000 people, several outstanding museums, and, due to its turbulent history, a fascinating mix of architectural styles.

The event features a marathon (four laps), a half marathon (two laps), a 10.55km quarter marathon (one lap), a 4.2km run, and children's races.

All races begin and end at the Town Hall (pictured). The route is a gently undulating 10.55-kilometre loop which takes runners through the city centre and through the long and narrow Stadtpark, partly on gravel paths.

In 2012, the marathon winners were Denny Richter (2:53:30) and Sindy Walther (3:35:51).

The Chemnitz Marathon is a non-profit event. Proceeds will be donated to charity.
