Lake Kaltern is located around 20 kilometres south of Bolzano, capital of South Tyrol, a largely German-speaking province in the far north of Italy.

The lake is about 1800 metres long and 900 metres wide. Although in the Alps, it's at an elevation of just 215 metres above sea level. The climate in the area is very mild, and the lake is surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards.

The event comprises a 10.55km race (one lap around the lake) and a half marathon (two laps). As Lake Kaltern is relatively small the route includes an out-and-back section through the orchards to the south.

South Tyrol is home to a large number of outstanding athletes, and many of them have regularly taken part in the event.

In 2009, the half marathon winners were Said Boudalia (1:08:27) and Petra Pircher (1:28:34).
