The Altstadtlauf is staged in the historic centre of Klagenfurt, capital of the province of Carinthia in southern Austria.

It is held on a Friday evening in July, when most of the city folk hangs around at the Wörthersee, the 16km-long lake on the edge of the city.

The event offers 5k and 10k races, which follow a 2.5k-course through and around Klagenfurt's small old town.

The start and the finish are on Neuer Platz, the largest but not the most attractive square in Klagenfurt. Participants run, however, across the very pretty Alter Platz as well.

The course is flat, AIMS-certified, and completely traffic-free.

In 2009, the 10k winners were Gernot Hammer (32:48) and Birgit Haas (40:36).
