27th Tata Minimarathon 2010
Tata is a pleasant small old town in northern Hungary, located around 70 kilometres to the west of Budapest. Built around two pretty lakes, it's a popular holiday destination.
Tata is easy to reach by train as the railway line Vienna-Budapest runs through the town.
The 14km Minimarathon, held in the beginning of August, is a long-standing and popular high-summer running event. Although it's usually scorching hot at the start at 4pm, the race regularly sees more than 700 finishers.
The race follows a very attractive route through the old town, past the 14th-century lakeside castle, along the promenade of the Old Lake (the larger lake of the two), and through the leafy English Park which surrounds the Small Lake.
Over the years, many outstanding athletes have taken part in the event.
In 2009, Ethiopia's Ashenafi Erkolo, who lives near Tata, led the field home in a time of 44:56. Former Olympian and Paris Marathon winner Judit Nagy of Hungary was first woman in 50:56.
