The Elvira Maraton in Szombathely, Hungary's oldest city, is a relatively small event, held in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

The 42km marathon is the main race but more runners may compete in the 60km relay, a fun run for teams of up to ten runners. The 6km Hobby Run forms part of the Cerr-Cup, a series of ten races in the Austria-Hungary-Slovenia border region.

The start and finish of all races is at the modern Király sports complex in the southern part of Szombathely. The route runs out and back on a country lane to the village of Ják (pictured), which is nine kilometres to the south of Szombathely. The turning point is at the magnificent 13th-century Romanesque church in Ják.

Participants in the marathon run twice to Ják and back, and then an additional 6km lap. Relay teams run ten 6km-laps.

Running on a hot summer afternoon (the start is at 2 p.m.) might prove to be very demanding but you will surely get some cool drinks at the after-race party.

Race organizer Ms Elvira Söjtöri will celebrate her 60th birthday this year (the reason for the 60K relay) and welcomes all runners to her birthday party with music, dance, pasta and drinks.

In 2008, the marathon winners were Éva Varga (2:58:36) and Ethiopia's Ashenafi Erkolo (2:30:35), who is based in Hungary.
