Held annually since 2002 in Gera, a city of about 91,000 people in the state of Thüringen (Thuringia) in Germany, the Elstertal-Marathon (Elster Valley Marathon) attracts several hundred runners every year.

It offers races for all ages and fitness levels:

  • 800m, 1km, 2km Kinderläufe (children's races)
  • 3km Jedermannlauf (fun run)
  • 10km
  • 15km
  • 27km
  • 42.2km Marathon
  • 15km Staffel (5x3km relay run for teams of up to five runners)

The start/finish area is at the Hofwiesenbad swimming pool in the Hofwiesenpark, a public park situated on the right bank of the Weiße Elster (White Elster).

The children's races, the non-competitive fun run and the relay take place in the park whereas the longer races take the runners out and back along the river.

The marathon route runs out and back in two directions, at first southwards to the village of Wünschendorf (27km) and then northwards to the beer-producing town of Bad Köstritz (15km).

One of the highlights on the course is the Historische Holzbrücke Wünschendorf (pictured), a beautiful historic wooden bridge, which the marathon runners cross in both directions.
