Held annually in October in Dresden, capital of the state of Sachsen (Saxony) and one of Germany's most popular tourist destinations, the Dresden Marathon offers five very scenic races:
- 4.2km Zehntelmarathon (1/10 Marathon)
- 10.55km Viertelmarathon (1/4 marathon)
- 21.1km Halbmarathon (1/2 marathon)
- 42.2km Marathon
- 42.2km Marathon-Staffel (4-person relay)
The start area and the finish area are both near the ICD (Internationales Congress Center) on the edge of the city centre.
Participants in the 4.2km and 10.55km races run on roads and bike paths along the Elbe river, passing many monumental historic buildings (pictured).
The half marathon is one lap and the marathon is two laps of a mainly flat course which runs along the river, through the city centre and through the beautiful Großer Garten park. The second lap of the marathon is a bit different from the first lap.
