Zagreb (Croatia), Sunday 12 July 2015
The Sljemenski Maraton (‘Sljeme Marathon’) trail races are held every year on a Sunday in July on Mount Medvednica which rises to the north of Zagreb, Croatia.
Last year, the event had 580 finishers.
Three race distances are on offer—4km, 14km, and 42.2km. Participants in the marathon run three laps of the 14km course.
It is also possible to form a team of three runners to run the marathon as a relay (3 x 14km). One member of each team must be of the opposite sex.
Starting and finishing at the radio transmission tower on top of Sljeme, the highest peak of the mountain (1031m), the route is a 14km loop on woodland trails.
The first half of the race is downhill, the second half uphill. Each lap includes 383m of descent and 383m of ascent!
Sljeme is a 20km uphill drive from Zagreb's main square. You can get there by car or you can take the public bus.
