This marathon race in Germany takes place in the 1300-year-old city of Würzburg, which is located in a wine-growing area in the northern part of Bavaria.

The event offers a 42.2km marathon, a 21.1km half marathon, a 10km fun run, a 14km walk, and children's races.

Participants in the marathon run two laps of a certified, gently undulating course that involves both sides of the River Main.

The route visits some outstanding sights, for instance the Residenz (a monumental Baroque palace and a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Romanesque Cathedral, and the Alte Mainbrücke which connects Würzburg's Altstadt with the fortress of Festung Marienberg (pictured above).

In 2013, the half marathon had over 1600 finishers, and more than 600 completed the full marathon. Around 250 runners took part in the 10km run.

The time limit to finish the marathon is 5 hours 30 minutes.
