The Gorski tek na Grintovec in Slovenia is an extremely tough uphill mountain race that features almost 2000 metres of elevation gain over a 9.6-kilometre route.

More than 250 athletes, among them a number of world-class mountain runners, finished the race last year. The winners were Azerya Teklay of Eritrea (1:17:27) and Iva Milesová of the Czech Republic (1:39:37).

The start is at an elevation of 600 metres at the end of the road into the steep Kamniška Bistrica valley, about 35 kilometres north of Ljubljana. The finish line is on the summit of Mount Grintovec (2558m), the highest peak of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

The time limit to finish the race is 2hr 30min. It is not allowed to use hiking poles.

The first half of the route is on gravel roads and trails through dense forests. Then, participants run (or hike) on steep mountain trails and on loose scree through unspoilt and spectacular high-alpine scenery.

There are six drink stations on the course and one at the finish, but there are no facilities on the summit of Grintovec, no roads or cableways, no shelter, nothing but bare rocks.

Participants must walk back to the mountain hut on the Kokra saddle (1793m) to get their personal clothing, and then they must walk all the way back to the start area as well — a real challenge after such a gruelling run.
