The 12.7-kilometre Schneekopflauf multi-terrain race is held in the Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald), a densely wooded mountain range in Central Germany.

The race follows a challenging point-to-point course that includes approximately 450 metres of ascent and 200 metres of descent.

Starting at an elevation of 711 metres in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig (pictured), a winter sports and hiking resort on the ridge of the Thüringer Wald, participants run across the Großer Finsterberg (952m) to the finish line on the summit of the Schneekopf (978m), the second-highest peak of the Thuringian Forest.

In 2012, the race had 250 finishers. The fastest runners were Christian Seiler (48min 19sec) and Nicole Kruhme (58min 57sec).
