The marathon in Croatia's capital city Zagreb is a growing event—but it still has a much smaller field than most other city marathons in Central Europe.

Last year, 268 runners completed the two-lap marathon, and 666 finished the half marathon. Public interest in the event is relatively low, and it's not uncommon that residents loudly complain about the city centre being (more or less) closed to traffic.

Nevertheless, it's an interesting event, and the atmosphere in the start/finish area on Zagreb's spacious main square (Ban Jelačić Square) is fine.

The route is an out-and-back course, which is very mildly undulating. Competitors run eastwards to the suburb of Dubec, and then back to the city centre. After that, they run westwards along Ilica (Zagreb's main shopping street) and back again to Jelačić Square. Participants in the full marathon run two laps of this course.

Last year, the marathon winners were Yared Admasu Miratu of Ethiopia (2:17:40) and Kenyan-born Lucia Kimani of Bosnia and Herzegovina (2:34:57).
