The 10k Night Race at Lake Bled, Slovenia's most favoured alpine tourist destination, has quickly become one of the most popular running events in the country. Almost 1000 runners took part in last year's 3rd edition of the race, 44 per cent of them women.

The picture-postcard lake is surely reason enough to visit the place, and few runners can resist the temptation of an after-race kremšnita, Bled's famous cream-cake.

Entrants run one and a half laps around the lake. The route is mildy undulating on roads and footpaths, which are very narrow in parts. Some sections are on hard dirt trails.

If you don't feel like running 10k, take part in the 1.2km "Recreational Run", for which there's no entry fee. Nevertheless, all participants get a T-Shirt and a kremšnita.

In 2009, the winners were Neža Mravlje (38:00) and Marko Pintar (32:32).
