Almost 400 runners took part in last year's first edition of the Mali Blejski Maraton around Lake Bled, Slovenia's most popular alpine resort.

The race is on footpaths around the picture-postcard lake, which is home to a medieval castle on a clifftop and a little church island.

Entrants can choose between the half marathon (three-and-a-half laps around the lake) and the 5.8k race (one lap).

The route is flat on the southern shore and undulating on the northern shore.

The course is not really suitable to set a personal record as there are some rather narrow sections, and there might be quite a few tourists walking on the course.

Most of the route is on asphalt. Some sections are on hard-packed sand.

Half marathon runners start at the Zaka Rowing Centre, where the World Rowing Championships will be held in 2011. The finish line is two kilometres further east on the lakeside promenade.

In 2009, the winners were Sebastian Zarnik (1:15:09) and Valerija Mrak (1:25:39).
