28. Volkslauf Pressegger See 2010
28th Run around Lake Pressegg 2010
Hermagor (Austria), Sunday 15 August 2010
Every year, the races around the Pressegger See near the small town of Hermagor in southern Austria attract a fair number of holiday makers and day trippers from neighbouring countries.
It's easy to see why. The lake has an idyllic location in the 100km-long Gail River Valley, which runs parallel to the border with Italy. Situated at an elevation of 560 metres, it's hemmed in by 2000-metre peaks to the north and south. Reeds cover the eastern and western shores.
The 1km-long and 600m-wide lake is great for a swim as the water is very clean and warm in the summer.
The event offers two races, both following undulating trails and minor roads:
The 5.6km "Seelaufklassiker" ("Classic Lake Race") travels once around the lake.
The 12.4km "Lange Seerunde" ("Long loop around the lake") incorporates an additional loop around the reeds to the east.
Access to the lake is very limited but participants get a free ticket to the beach.
In 2009, the winners of the long race were Erich Kokaly (41:38) and Ulrike Striednig (55:11).
