61st International Vienna Höhenstrasse Race

This traditional 14.3km race travels along Vienna's longest road, far from the hustle and bustle of Austria's capital.

The Höhenstrasse is a historic panoramic road in the far north-east of the city, completed in 1938.

Built of granite paving stones it features hairpin turns like an alpine road as it winds its way through the hills of the Wienerwald ("Vienna Woods").

The start is on the Leopoldsberg (425m), a steep hill on the right bank of the River Danube, popular for the views of the river 260 metres below.

The road will be completely closed to traffic. You will run all the way through woods, meadows and vineyards to the finish on the athletics track in the sports centre "Marswiese".

The course is undulating with an overall elevation loss of about 100 metres.

In 2008, Geoffrey Gikuni-Ndungu of Kenya was the first finisher in a time of 42:12, a blistering pace of 2:57 per kilometre! This year, he set a new course record in the Grossglockner mountain race.

On the women's side, 48-year-old Carina Lilge-Leutner, winner of the Vienna Marathon 1987, and her daughter Lisa-Maria Leutner (18) broke the tape together in a time of 54:43.
