10th 'European Marathon' 2009

The Maratona d'Europa is a growing event with a marathon, a marathon relay (two runners run 21.1km each), a half marathon, a 7km non-competitive run and an inline-skating half marathon.

It's an interesting route with the start of the marathon in Gradisca d'Isonzo, an old fortress town built by the Venetians at the end of the 15th century. On your way to Trieste you will pass the largest Italian military cemetery of World War I in Redipuglia, the shipbuilding town of Monfalcone, the castle and the cliffs of Duino and the castle of Miramare. From there, you will run along the Riviera to the grand finish on the Piazza Unità d'Italia, which is right on the seafront.

The half marathon runners will join the field at Duino, the 7km runners at Miramare. The course is mostly flat but you should expect some hills around Duino.
