12th Sinj Half Marathon 2009

Sinj is a small town of about 11,000 people, located on a plateau 35 kilometres inland from the coastal city of Split, the largest city in the Dalmatia region in the southern part of Croatia.

The town is widely known as a Marian pilgrimage centre but most Croatian runners will think of it as the home of the Atletski Klub Sinj, one of Croatia's most successful running clubs.

Although running is a minority sport in Dalmatia, the club has produced several male and female Croatian marathon champions.

Most of the time, the runners from the south have to travel to competitions in the north of the country. Once a year, however, the northeners hop on a bus to Sinj to take part in the Sinjski polumaraton, a half marathon road race across the thinly-populated plain. The course is certified and flat.

Last year, the fastest of the 133 half marathon finishers were Hungary's Zsolt Benedek (1:07:32) and Maria Vrajić of Croatia (1:24:32).
