20th New Year's Race - Dolsko 2009

This New Year's Race is held on 26 December. Start and finish is in Dolsko, a small village on the River Sava, just 16 kilometres from the city centre of Slovenia's capital Ljubljana.

The event incorporates races of 4.5, 10.5 and 14.7 kilometres.

The short race (4.5km) travels out-and-back the Sava valley. Last year, just 16 out of 261 finishers chose this distance. Most entrants decided to burn a few more calories and took part in one of the longer races, which go up and down the hills to the north.

The 14.7km race starts off in Dolsko, 10.5km runners join the field in the village of Kamnica.

The rural course through fields, woods and villages is nice. Most of the route is on asphalt. The difference in elevation between the highest and the lowest point is 150 metres.

All runners get a pair of slippers as a Christmas present, and after the race participants will be treated to lunch and some sort of live performance.

In 2008, the winners of the 14.7km race were Boštjan Hrovat (48:59) and Urša Pintar (1:07:09).
