Vivicitta is an international running event that is held on the same day in more than 50 cities around the world. It has its origin in Italy and aims at promoting "sport for all", health, solidarity and peaceful coexistence. All Vivicitta events include a 12km race and a non-competitive event.

The Vivicitta in Budapest is staged on the 2.5km-long Margit sziget (Margaret Island) in the River Danube, just upriver from the city centre. It's a popular recreation ground with landscape parks, medieval ruins, thermal outdoor pools, spa hotels, an open-air theatre, a small zoo, etc.

The 2.8km walkers and the 3.5km runners move entirely on the island. The 6.5km and 12km runners cross Árpád Bridge at the northern end of the island and run along the Danube before they cross Margaret Bridge at the southern end to come home to the long finishing straight on the island. The 12k race includes a loop around the magnificent 268m-long Parliament Building.
