The S1 Trail, or la corsa della bora ("the bora wind run"), is a multi-terrain running event held yearly in January since 2016 in the Province of Trieste in the north-eastern corner of Italy.

Starting at four different locations, the event offers four tremendously-scenic races.

All routes run along the Gulf of Trieste and through the carso, the beautiful wind-swept Karst Plateau that rises steeply from the Adriatic Sea.

The finish line is in the beach resort of Sistiana, which is approximately 21 kilometres from the port of Trieste (see map below).

Race distance Name Ascent Descent Start Finish
8km S1 Just Fun  +100m -100m Villagio del Pescatore Sistiana
21km S1 Half +420m -760m Opičina
57km S1 Trail  +2,370m  -2,820m Pesek
164km S1 Ultra +6,610m -6,610m Sistiana

The 8km and 21km races take place entirely on Italian soil whereas the 57km and 164km routes take the runners through two countries: Italy and Slovenia.

The 164km run is an extremely-demanding event. Only highly-experienced trail runners are able to finish this race. There may be strong winds and plenty of snow on the course which is very technical in parts. The highest point on the course is at 1,064m above sea level.
