Marcia di Babbo Natale - Santas run and walk around Spilimbergo, Italy (Copyright © 2015 Hendrik Böttger / runinternational.eu)

The Marcia dei Babbo Natale is held annually shortly before Christmas in Spilimbergo, a very beautiful old town of about 12,000 people, situated at the foot of the Alps in the Province of Pordenone in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in the north-eastern part of Italy.

It's a lovely non-competitive running and walking event that attracts around 1,000 or more runners and walkers every year.

Some are dressed as Babbo Natale (Santa Claus), others wear plain clothes.

Four scenic routes are available, approximately 4km, 6km, 12km and 18km long.

Participants run, jog or walk through the festively-decorated historic town centre as well as through residential and rural areas.

The route is on mixed terrain (cobbles, asphalt, gravel and trails) which is mainly flat, with a few ascents and descents along the way.

The entry fees are very low, and all finishers are treated with a meal after the marcia.
