The Schortenser Jever-Fun-Lauf is a road running event held each August in the district of Friesland in the state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) in northern Germany.

It usually attracts an international crowd of more than 1,500 runners to Schortens, a town of about 20,000 residents, situated on the pancake-flat East Frisian peninsula near the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven.

Named after a non-alcoholic beer that is brewed in the nearby town of Jever, the event offers races for all ages:

  • 500m (kids' run)
  • 1 mile (1.609km kids' run)
  • 5km (run, walking, nordic walking)
  • 10km
  • 10 miles (16.09km)

All races are held on a flat, fast, certified and spectator-friendly 4.125km loop course. The route runs through the town centre and through residential areas, passing the St.-Stephanus-Kirche (pictured above) which was built in the 12th century on a 4.5-metre-high artificial hill to protect the church from flooding. Schortens is situated at an elevation of just four metres above sea level!
