Held each year on a Saturday night in May, the Schweriner Nachtlauf (‘Schwerin Night Run’) attracts several hundred runners to the old city of Schwerin which is situated on the vast Mecklenburgische Seenplatte (Mecklenburg Lake Plateau) in northern Germany.

Surrounded by lakes in all directions, Schwerin is a magnificent place for distance running, cycling and swimming.

Entrants can choose to run either 5km, 10km, 15km or 20km.

The event also features a relay for teams of four runners (4x5km), children's races and a 5km nordic walking race.

Starting on Markt, the main square in Schwerin's Old Town, the route is a tremendously-scenic 5km loop through the historic city centre.

It takes the runners through the picturesque Altstadt, around two lakes (Pfaffenteich and Burgsee), across the Schlossinsel (a little island that is home to one of Germany's most beautiful castles) and through the baroque Schlossgarten.
