The Sljemenski Maraton (English: ‘Sljeme Marathon’ or ‘Hog's Trail Marathon’) is Croatia's oldest trail running event.

It is held every year in the summer on the densely-wooded Medvednica mountain which rises to the north of Zagreb.

The start and the finish are at the Tourist apartments Snježna kraljica near the top of Sljeme (1,033m), the highest peak of the mountain.

Four races are available:

  • 5km run & walk (one lap)
  • 14km (one lap)
  • 42.2km (three laps)
  • 42.2km relay (three laps) for mixed teams of three runners

The route is a very challenging loop on woodland trails. Each 14k lap features 650 metres of descent and 650 metres of ascent!

The 5k, which will be held for the first time this year, includes 175 metres of descent and 175 metres of ascent.

Sljeme is a twenty-kilometre uphill drive from Zagreb's city centre. You can get there by car or you can use a combination of tram and public bus.
