The Geolauf is held annually in the spring in Villach, a town of about 60,000 people situated in the state of Kärnten (Carinthia) in the southern part of Austria, near the borders with Italy and Slovenia.

Starting at the Fachhochschule Kärnten (Carinthia University of Applied Sciences) in the eastern part of Villach, the route is a 7.2km loop which follows the Drauradweg cycleway along both banks of the River Drau.

The course is mostly flat but it includes some short ascents as well.

It is possible to form a team of three runners and run the race as a relay. The first team member runs 3km, the second 1.5km and the third 2.7km.
