Zalaegerszeg (Hungary), Thursday 31 December 2015
Held annually on New Year's Eve in the city of Zalaegerszeg in western Hungary, the Egerszegi Mountain Man Marathon attracts more than 300 runners every year.
Four challenging routes are available:
- 3.5km
- 10.1km (+190m of ascent/-190m of descent)
- 24.2km (+360m/-360m)
- 40.9km (+720m/-720m)
Starting and finishing at the Deák Ferenc Szakközépiskola college in the south-western part of Zalaegerszeg (about 1.5km from the city centre), participants run up and down several hills — through woods, vineyards, parks, residential and industrial areas.
The race is run on a mix of roads, pavements, cycleways and trails.
The event is more of a fun run than a serious race. The route is marked but it's not closed to traffic, and there are not very many marshals on the course.
Last year, the fastest finishers in the 40.9km run were Gábor Németh (2:46:10) and Szilvia Lubics (3:17:40).
