The Röntgenlauf takes runners along the Röntgenweg, a 59.6km-long hiking trail around the city of Remscheid in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany.

The event features various multi-terrain races for all ages and abilities — children's races, 5km, 10km, half marathon, full marathon, 63.3km ultra marathon, and this year also a 100km run.

Hikers and nordic walkers can choose between two routes — 16km or 21.1km.

All races begin in Remscheid-Lennep where Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, the first person to detect X-rays, was born in 1845.

Held in the hills of the Bergisches Land, the routes are challenging, varied and scenic, and they offer many fine views of the region's rich industrial heritage, for instance of the graceful Müngsten Bridge, Germany's highest railway bridge (pictured).

The 63.3km ultra marathon is one loop around Remscheid. The route includes about 850m of ascent and 850m of descent. The race can be run as a relay (3x21.1km).

The half marathon (+265m/-420m) and the full marathon (+537m/-649m) are point-to-point races along the Röntgenweg. Finishers can use the free shuttle bus service to get back to the start area.

The 5k (one lap) and the 10k (two laps) take the runners to a reservoir formed by a dam across the River Wupper.
