Wallnau auf Fehmarn (Germany), Saturday 17 June 2017
This multi-terrain running event is held on Fehmarn, a very flat island on the German Baltic Sea coast and a preferred summer holiday destination for those who love the wind and the fresh sea air.
Fehmarn is connected to the German mainland by a road and rail bridge. There are also ferry connections with Denmark.
Five race distances are available:
|Race distance||Start time||Number of finishers 2016
||kids' race (children born 2006 or later)||10.10||45|
|5km Lauf||5k race||10.35||50|
|10km Lauf||10k race||10.40||90|
|21.1km Halbmarathon||13.1 miles half marathon||10.30||127|
|42.2km Marathon||26.2 miles marathon||10.00||74|
Last year, around 400 runners took part in the event. Frank Themsen won the marathon in a time of 2hr 56min 6sec. The first lady, Gaby Marek-Schmid, finished the race in 3hr 32min 32sec. The time limit to complete the 42.2km marathon course is 5hr 30min.
The start and the finish are at the Strandcamping Wallnau on the west coast, near the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve, a lovely resting spot for migratory birds and ornithologists.
The full marathon is two laps of an accurately-measured and certified loop course through the north-western part of Fehmarn. The race takes the runner on grassy dikes along the coast and on asphalt and gravel roads through the pancake-flat agricultural interior of the island.
