Zagreb (Croatia), Sunday 9 July 2017
Held annually in high summer on the densely-wooded Mount Medvednica, which rises above the city of Zagreb, the Sljemenski Maraton (Sljeme Marathon) is Croatia's oldest trail running event.
Starting and finishing at the radio transmission tower on top of Sljeme (1031m), the highest peak of the mountain, the route is a 14km loop on woodland trails.
You can choose to run either one lap (14km), two laps (28km) or three laps (42km), but be aware that it's a really tough race!
The first half of the route is downhill, the second half uphill. Each lap features 478m of descent and 478m of ascent!
The course records are held by Nikola Špoljar (3:11:50) and Veronika Jurišić (3:27:01) who has won the race ten times already.
Sljeme is a 20km uphill drive from Zagreb's city centre. You can get there by car or you can use a combination of tram and public bus (see details on the official event website).
