Organized by the athletics club LCC Wien, the Wiener Herbstmarathon ('Vienna Autumn Marathon') offers five races, held on a pancake-flat and traffic-free course through the Prater, Vienna's largest public park:

  • 7.03km (one lap)
  • 21.1km half marathon (three laps)
  • 42.2km marathon (six laps)
  • 21.1km half marathon relay (three runners)
  • 42.2km marathon relay (six runners)

Starting and finishing on the athletics track of the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Austria's biggest stadium, the route is a 7,032.5m-long loop through the park.

The course is completely flat and very fast. We don't know of any other marathon course in Central Europe that is as flat as this one.

Each lap, however, includes an out-and-back portion with a U-turn on the Hauptallee, a 4.4km-long avenue that is lined with chestnut trees (pictured).

The time limit to finish the race is six hours.

Around 800 runners took part in the event last year.
