Held annually since 1924 in Košice, Slovakia's second-largest city with a population of 240,000, the Peace Marathon is Europe's oldest marathon race.

The event features a half marathon (one lap), a full marathon (two laps) and a marathon relay race for teams of four runners.

In addition, there's a 4.2km fun run (Minimarathon) and a 20km race for inline skaters, handbikers and wheelchair racers.

Last year, 1,324 runners finished the 42.195km race, making the Peace Marathon once again the biggest marathon race in Slovakia. All races combined, the event drew about 10,000 participants from more than 40 countries.

The marathon course is IAAF/AIMS-certified, traffic-free and mostly flat and fast. The difference between the lowest and the highest point on the course is 16 metres. Each lap features 37 metres of elevation gain.

Starting and finishing in the city centre, the route runs through Košice's very pretty Old Town and through residential areas in the northern and southern parts of the city.
