The Rügenbrücken-Marathon ('Rügen Bridge Marathon') offers the opportunity to run across the two bridges that connect the Hanseatic town of Stralsund with the Baltic holiday island of Rügen—the 9-year-old Rügenbrücke (pictured) and the 80-year-old Rügendamm (‘Rügen Causeway’).

Seven races are on offer—five for runners and two for walkers and nordic walkers:

The 2km race for children between 6 and 13 takes place in Stralsund's harbour.

The 6km route is a point-to-point route that runs from the village of Altefähr on Rügen across the 4km-long Rückenbrücke to the finish line in the harbour of Stralsund.

The 12km race, the half marathon and the marathon begin and end in the harbour. Participants run through Stralsund's historic town centre, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and then across the imposing Rügenbrücke to Rügen. The turning point for the 12km race is at the end of the bridge. Half marathon and marathon runners run a loop on the island (partly off road) before they run across the Rügendamm back home to Stralsund. The time limit to finish the 42.2km marathon is six hours.
