The Maraton državnosti ("Marathon of Statehood") commemorates Slovenia's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on 25 June 1991.

The event features a 10.5km race (one lap) and a half marathon (two laps).

Both races begin and end at the Dvorana Zlatorog handball arena on the northern edge of Celje, a town of about 38,000 residents, located on the railway line between Ljubljana and Maribor.

The route runs on undulating roads and cycleways out and back through rural areas and woods. The turning point is at the Šmartinsko jezero reservoir (pictured).
