Kokos Trail - on the Karst Plateau near Trieste, Italy (Copyright © 2012 Hendrik Böttger / runinternational.eu)

The Kokos Trail race features an outstandingly-scenic 15km route around the village of Basovizza which sits on the thinly-populated Karst Plateau above the port of Trieste in the north-east of Italy.

The course includes about 500 metres of ascent and 500m of descent.

Starting and finishing at Basovizza's football pitch (at about 380 metres above sea level), competitors run almost entirely on trails through woods and grassland.

The highest point on the course is at an elevation of 672 metres on Monte Cocusso (Slovene: Kokoš), a wooded hill on the border with Slovenia.

In addition to the 15km race the event offers an 8km run with 300m of elevation change.
