Starting and finishing in the village of Kainach bei Voitsberg, this Bergmarathon (mountain marathon) takes runners up and down the Gleinalpe (or Gleinalm) mountain range in Austria's state of Styria.

The 44km race can be tackled as an individual runner or as a 3-person relay team.

The route, which features about 1800m of ascent and 1800m of descent, is a scenic loop through forests and mountain pastures, mostly on gravel roads and trails.

The start/finish area is at 542m above sea level. The highest point on the course is at an elevation of 1790m on the grass-covered ridge of the Gleinalpe.

Runners should expect to add at least one hour to their road marathon finishing time.

In 2014, the Bergmarathon winners were Thomas Unger (3:42:14) and Karin Freitag (4:00:48). The time limit to complete the course is seven hours.

The event also offers an 18.5km race for nordic walkers. It is not allowed, however, to use hiking poles in the 44km mountain marathon.
