Goethe and Schiller in Weimar

More than 3,000 runners took part in last year's Weimarer Stadtlauf which is held annually in the ‘Stadt der deutschen Klassik’ Weimar, a city of 65,000 people in the state of Thüringen (Thuringia) in central Germany.

The event offers a 10k race (two laps), a half marathon (four laps), and a number of shorter children's races.

Starting and finishing on Goetheplatz in the city centre, participants run on asphalt and cobbles through Weimar's very pretty historic centre, and on gravel paths through the English-style ‘Park an der Ilm’ where they pass ‘Goethes Gartenhaus’ (pictured below). The route is gently undulating.

Thousands of spectators line the course every year as the Stadtlauf forms part of the annual Zwiebelmarkt (Onion Market) which has been held for 360 years and which attracts approximately 300,000 visitors over three days.

Weimar's cultural heritage is immense. Many literary and artistic geniuses like Goethe, Schiller, Cranach, Bach and Liszt worked there, and in 1919 the famous Bauhaus art school was founded in Weimar.
