Tuheljske Toplice (Croatia), Sunday 25 May 2014
Participants in the Polumaraton Mihanović ("Half Marathon Mihanović") run 21.1km of a very hilly and scenic course through the delightful Hrvatsko Zagorje region in northern Croatia.
Participants meet at the spa of Tuheljske Toplice (ca. 50km north-west of Zagreb), from where a bus brings them to the start in the hilltop village of Klanjec, which is about 7km away.
After a group photo at the memorial of the poet Antun Mihanović the race traditionally kicks off with a deafening bang from a historic pistol.
The first kilometre is steep downhill. Then, competitors run along the River Sutla, which forms the border with Slovenia, and through the lovely museum village of Kumrovec (pictured) where they pass the birthplace and the school of Tito, father of communist Yugoslavia.
The second half of the race goes into the hills — through woods, vineyards, cornfields and vegetable plots, dotted with picturesque cottages. The finish line is at the open-air spa complex of Tuheljske Toplice.
The route is not closed to traffic but car traffic is usually limited.
