Held in the venerable old city of Regensburg in the state of Bavaria in southern Germany, the Regensburg Marathon offers a full marathon (two laps), a half marathon, and a 10.5km quarter marathon.

Starting and finishing on the edge of the Donaupark in the western part of the city, all three races are mostly flat loop courses that take the runners through residential areas and along the River Danube into Regensburg's medieval Old Town, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

All routes pass a great number of outstanding buildings, including the magnificent Gothic Regensburg Cathedral (pictured). Some sections are run on cobbles.

Participants in the marathon and half marathon also run a loop on a 1.3km-long systems test course for test vehicles, located in the less scenic eastern part of the city.

More than 3500 runners took part in the three races last year. The fastest marathon finishers were Martin Fischer (2:41:39) and Tatiana Mitkina (3:05:17). The time limit to complete the course is 5hr 30min.
