24th ‘Run along the Dovžan Gorge’ 2014

The Tek po Dovžanovi soteski is a lovely small running event, held in a steep valley in the Karavanke mountains on the border between Slovenia and Austria.

The race is 8 kilometres long and mostly on gravel roads. Starting and finishing in the hamlet of Jelendol, the route runs out and back along a disused railway track. The first half of the course is gently uphill (50 metres of elevation gain), the second half is downhill.

The only way to get to Jelendol is to drive (or run) through the spectacular 19th-century road tunnel in the Dovžanova soteska (‘Dovžan Gorge’), a protected natural monument, situated three kilometres from the old shoe-making town of Tržič:
