The Karwendelmarsch offers two point-to-point routes (35km and 52km) through the Karwendel Alps on the Austria-Germany border.

The 35km route is meant for hikers and nordic walkers whereas the 52km route is open to hikers, nordic walkers, and runners as well.

All participants will have their finishing times digitally recorded but only finishers in the 52km run (‘Karwendellauf’) will be eligible for prizes.

Both the 35km and the 52km routes are very scenic but also highly demanding. The 52km ultra marathon features almost 2300m of climbing.

Starting at 6am in the village of Scharnitz (967m) on the western edge of the Karwendel, participants run (or walk) on hiking trails towards Lake Achen (German: Achensee), which marks the eastern edge of the massif.

The 35km route ends in the hamlet of Eng (1227m) which is surrounded by pastures and imposing mountain peaks.

From there, the 52km route climbs to the highest point on the course (1903m) before it descends to the finish line in the resort of Pertisau (932m) on the western shore of the Achensee.

The time limit to complete the course is a generous eleven hours for the 35km walk and fourteen hours for the ultra marathon.
