Moena - Cavalese (Italy), Sunday 1 September 2013
Held on a scenic 25.5-kilometre point-to-point course in the Dolomites in northern Italy, the Marcialonga Running race attracts a crowd of around 1500 runners.
Starting in the small town of Moena (pictured), which is situated at an elevation of 1165m in the Val di Fassa, competitors run on roads and trails along the River Avisio to the finish in the ski resort of Cavalese, which sits at 983m in the Val di Fiemme.
Most of the route is downhill. The course drops about 300m over the first 22km. The last part of the race is tough, however, as the route climbs approximately 130m over the last 3.5km.
Last year, the fastest finishers were Giovanni Gualdi (1:19:25) and Eliana Patelli (1:34:19). The time limit to complete the course is 3 hours 30 minutes.
