The Rügenbrücken-Marathon offers the opportunity to run across the two bridges that connect the German mainland with the Baltic holiday island of Rügen — the new Rügenbrücke (pictured) and the much older Rügendamm ("Rügen Causeway").

Entrants can choose between the 6k, the 12k, the half marathon, or the marathon. The 6k and 12k races are open to runners and walkers and nordic walkers as well.

All routes (except the 6k) begin and end at the harbour of the town of Stralsund, near the historic town centre which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Participants in the 6k start on the island and run across the 4km-long Rügenbrücke to Stralsund. The 12k is out and back across the Rügenbrücke, whereas the half marathon and marathon runners run across the Rügenbrücke to Rügen and across the old bridge back to Stralsund. About 8km of the marathon route are run on trails.

Over 2000 runners and around 700 walkers took part in the event last year. The top marathon finishers were Uwe Laenger (2:40:56) and Netti Scoor (3:44:12)
