Held since 1924, the Košice Peace Marathon is Europe's oldest marathon race.

More than 800 runners took part in last year's 89th edition of the marathon, and over 1600 completed the half marathon.

The marathon is two laps of a certified, traffic-free, and mostly flat and fast course through Košice, a pleasant and lively city of 240,000 people in eastern Slovakia.

Starting and finishing in the heart of the city, participants run across Košice's delightful main square, through the historic town centre, and through residential areas.

This year, it will be particularly interesting to visit Košice as it is one of 2013's two European Capitals of Culture.
