Held on the tiny North Sea island of Heligoland (German: Helgoland), located about 47 kilometres off the German coast, the Helgoland Marathon stands out as a unique event.

Entrants can choose between the 5.8km "Mini-Marathon" and the 42.2km marathon. The marathon consists of four laps of a very challenging course that winds its way around almost every corner of the island.

Starting and finishing near the "Südstrand" beach, participants run through the "Unterland" (the low-lying parts of Helgoland), then steep uphill to the "Oberland", up and down some stairs, through a tunnel, down again, and out and back the mole.

Each lap includes approximately 75 metres of climbing — overall about 300 metres!

In 2012, the top marathon finishers were Thomas Bauer (3:01:13) and Antje Möller (3:26:14). The time limit to complete the course is 5 hours 30 minutes.

Heligoland can be reached by ferry (from Hamburg, Cuxhaven, Büsum, and Wilhelmshaven), by catamaran (from Hamburg, Cuxhaven, and Wedel) or by plane (from Büsum and Bremerhaven).
